Obiettivi formativi

- Far conoscere le teorie e i metodi utilizzati all'interno dello Human-Computer Interaction.

- Introduce the main methods and theories used in Human-Computer Interaction Research
- Teach the criticalities involved when behavioral and cognitive theories are used for designing interactive systems
- Provide students with basic knowledge of research through design methods
- Directly work on projects with the aim of designing new technologies for augmenting the human mind

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Students are expected to:
- become able of critical, autonomous reasoning on the topics discussed and to elaborate individual pathways across the relevant areas.
- become familiar with some of the central themes in the current Human-Computer Interaction debate, focusing on the border between psychological sciences and computer science.
- become aware of the value that design could have in advancing theoretical and applied research
- develop a practical experience of multidisciplinary design methodologies

For the final assignment the students will have to submit a 3 to 5 pages report on the topic discussed during the lab. The final score of the laboratory, following the Dublin Descriptors, will be "PASSED" or "NOT PASSED".

Programma

The program is structured in two different parts. In the first one, the fundamental concepts implied in the human-computer interaction and in the design of interactive system will be outlined, from two different points of view, technological and psychological. In this part, we will also focus on how the advancements in wearable and ubiquitous technologies will allow, in the next few years, to track transparently human attitudes and behaviors. Then, we will highlight the different types of systems for behavior change and for augmenting the human mind, and the theoretical models that inform them. Finally, we will outline the main theoretical, methodological and practical issues when designing and evaluating systems for behavior change and technologies for augmenting the human mind.

The second part will be dedicated to enact the notions learned in a group project. After discussing the methodological means for designing new interactive systems in Human-Computer Interaction research, we will illustrate the method of research through design and its different declination (e.g. design fiction, critical design, reflective design, slow design). Then, students will be invited to envision and design a new technology able to enhance a specific function of the human cognition through techniques for generating ideas and methods of rapid prototyping. The results of the group work will be presented in the last part of the course, and students will be invited to discuss the individual, social and ethical implications of what they have designed.
